HSE Urges Employers to Protect Workers as UK Temperatures Rise

Working in Hot Temperatures

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is urging employers to take immediate action to protect staff working in hot temperatures after several heat health alerts were issued across parts of the UK. They warn that hot temperatures pose serious risks to workers over the coming weeks and throughout the course of the summer.

With hotter weather becoming increasingly common during the summer months, the workplace regulator is reminding businesses of their legal responsibility to manage the risks associated with excessive heat.

What Does the Law Say About Working in Hot Temperatures?

There is currently no maximum legal temperature for UK workplaces, even though heat is recognised as a workplace hazard. This means employers are required by law to identify potential risks and introduce the relevant measures to reduce the likelihood of employees suffering heat-related illnesses while working in hot temperatures, such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.

Industries including construction, manufacturing, warehousing, and agriculture can be particularly affected, especially where employees are exposed to direct sunlight, physically demanding work, or high temperatures generated by machinery.

Businesses are encouraged to consult with their staff to implement steps to help reduce the risks; These measures may include ensuring access to drinking water, providing shaded working areas, as well as longer rests during the hottest parts of the day. The HSE has also stressed the importance of training staff to recognise early symptoms of heat stress, heatstroke and overheating, allowing prompt intervention before conditions become serious.

Can I Sue an Employer for Injuries Sustained Working in the Heat?

If employers fail to meet their legal duty of care and a worker suffers significant harm or personal injury as a result, they may be entitled to pursue a claim. High temperatures can pose a serious risk to those who may be particularly vulnerable.
